The Flori, Flory, Florig, Flohri Families of Birkenau

The family line listed below is that of the European ancestors of the three Flory brothers, Johannes, George, and Adolph, who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1754 on the John and Elizabeth. It traces back their origin to their earliest known ancestor, Hans Flori, who was born in Switzerland in 1610 and who emigrated to Birkenau, Germany sometime prior to 1650. No one knows precisely where in Switzerland Hans was born, but it may have been somewhere in or near the Canton of Solothurn where there was a large concentration of Fluris. If so, Hans may have been born Catholic, as that is the predominant religion in the area. The line still continues in Birkenau today. In the 1960's, there was a major reunion of Fluri descendants with over 300 in attendance.

There may have been one or two other migrations to America from this line. The three brothers named above had another brother named Christian, who was born in 1721 and who disappears from local records after 1733. A passenger list to America lists a Christian Flori as having immigrated here in 1744, although no further records of this Christian are known. Still, if these two Christian Floris are one in the same, this earlier immigration probably was a major incentive for the immigration of 1754.

There definitely was, however, another Birkenau Flory immigration in the 19th century, that of Johan Philipp Florig, who was born in 1831. It is not clear at this point precisely when he left Germany, but there is a record of his marriage to a Maria Kohlkoff in 1856 at the Second Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, so the immigration must have taken place prior to that date. Chambersburg is a town outside of Pittsburgh, where at least one of Philipp's children eventually moved. The entire family may have relocated to the city as there is no record of Philipp or his children in Chambersburg after the national census in 1880.

What makes for intriguing speculation is that a George Flory, son of the immigrant 1733 father Johannes Flory, also migrated to Chambersburg about one hundred years earlier. Chambersburg is a relatively small town, and the chances of Philipp's setting up residence at a place where an earlier relative had once lived seems too highly coincidental to have been accidental. Accordingly, there may have been some communication between Florys in America and Florigs in Birkenau for about a century that ultimately encouraged Philipp to immigrate to Chambersburg. All of this is speculative, of course, and no definite proof exists that the families somehow corresponded with one another for this period of time.

In the genealogy below, the three brothers are listed, but no attempt has been made to include their American descendants, who are listed on another page on this site. Philipp and his children, however, are highlighted here. Nothing further is known about Philipp's family in America apart from what is listed. As mentioned earlier, they may have moved to the Pittsburgh area, where several Florigs appear at the end of the 19th century.

According to family legend, the original Hans Flori, born in 1610 in Switzerland, was a carpenter. Many of his descendants became carriage makers, although the trade of weaving seems to have predominated later on, particularly in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Descendants of Hans Flohri of Birkenau, Darmstadt-Hesse, Germany

Generation No. 1

1. HANS1 FLOHRI was born 1610 in Switzerland, and died April 11, 1685 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married APOLLONIA.

According to a German family tradition, Hans Flohri and his wife, Apollonia, came to the town in the late 1640's or early 1650's. Birkenau had been devastated both by disease and the effects of the Thirty Years War. Accordingly, the mayor sent out for skilled workmen, and Hans came as a carpenter. He was named Cantzlerin Hofbauer on May 23, 1655 at Birkenau City Hall.

Despite his skills, Hans is listed as a farmer in town records. That he possessed carpentry skills, though, is indicated by the fact that his descendants became the town's wagon makers. When his great grandsons Johannes and Adolph migrated to America in 1754, they both founded a long line of carpenters and farmers.

Birkenau church records list but one son, Peter, who, like his father, was born outside the town, perhaps in Switzerland. It is not known how many other children Hans had, but he was the father of at least one other son. In the town of Hohensachsen, which lies about four miles south of Birkenau, the local kirchenbuch lists a marriage there on January 1, 1664 between a Hans George Flori and an Anna Sibilla Westhofen. The couple had at least four children, Hans (Dec. 7, 1665), Hans Jacob (Jan. 12, 1668), Hans Philipp (Sept. 7, 1669), and Caspar (July 30, 1671). That this Hans George was the son of the Hans of Birkenau is indicated by the church records, which list one other contemporaneous Flori, Marcus, who may also have been Hans' son. At some point, both Hans George and Marcus left Hohensachsen for parts unknown, as their deaths are not recorded in church records.

In 1655, Birkenau records indicate that Hans was worth about 200 gulden, about average for the town, but only a little above poverty level. The relative income situation for his immediate descendants changed very little, and this may have been the primary reason for his great grandchildren, George, Johannes, and Adolph, emigrating to America.

The 1994 Birkenau town history, "1200 Jahre Birkenau. Ein Dorf und Seine Zeit," lists an earlier Flori in Birkenau, a Lorenz Flori, who was prosecuted in 1561 for stealing meat from a neighbor's wife. there is no other reference to this Lorenz, and the next municipal record to any Flori in the town is to the 1655 appearance of Hans Flori at a town meeting. A genealogist, Sabine Schleichert, who researched the Flori family in Birkenau had access to the original record of Lorenz Flori in the archives of the Baroness of Wamboldt. The reference is not very legible, but Schleichert believes that what was taken for "Flori" was really something like "Bori," so Lorenz was not a part of the family at all.

Death record of Appolonia Flori in 1671, who was buried on July 14, 1671.  To date this is the only known record of Han's wife

Children of HANS FLOHRI and APOLLONIA are:

2. i. HANS GEORGE2 FLORI, b. Bef. 1637.

3. ii. PETER FLOHRI, b. 1637; d. January 31, 1719/20, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

4. iii. MARCUS FLORI.

Generation No. 2

2. HANS GEORGE2 FLORI (HANS1 FLOHRI) was born Bef. 1637. He married ANNA SIBILLA WESTHOFEN January 12, 1663/64 in Hohensachsen, Germany, daughter of HANS WESTHOFEN.

There is no known record of Hans George Flori's birth. However, the fact that he is the son of Hans of Birkenau is indicated by the church records of Hohensachsen listing the banns for his marriage to Anna Sibilla Westhofen on Jan. 12, 1664. Hohensachsen is a scant 3-4 miles from Birkenau.

It is not known where Hans was born. He could have been born in Switzerland, or he could have been born in Birkenau prior to 1637 when the first records were kept.

Hohensachsen Church records listing the banns for Hans George's wedding in 1664

Children of HANS FLORI and ANNA WESTHOFEN are:

i. HANS3 FLORI, b. December 17, 1665, Hohensachsen, Germany.

ii. HANS JACOB FLORI, b. January 12, 1667/68, Hohensachsen, Germany.

iii. HANS PHILIPP FLORI, b. September 07, 1669, Hohensachsen, Germany.

iv. CASPAR FLORI, b. July 30, 1671, Hohensachsen, Germany.

3. PETER2 FLOHRI (HANS1) was born 1637, and died January 31, 1719/20 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married ANNA STUTZ June 20, 1671 in Birkenau, Darmstadt-Hesse, Germany, daughter of HANS STUTZ.

Peter was involved in two interesting land transactions in 1712. On April 11 of that year, he sold a house to his son Johannes and his wife for 175 florin. On May 15 of that same year, he purchased another house by a millstream from Anna Jost for 121 florin.

If Johannes passed this house on to George upon his death in 1751, George would have had just about enough property to purchase a round-trip ticket to America.

Peter was a Gerichtsschoffe--member of local judicial court and was a carriage maker

Children of PETER FLOHRI and ANNA STUTZ are:

5. i. MARIA MAGDALENA3 FLOHRI, b. September 25, 1673, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

ii. MARCUS FLOHRI, b. 1676.

In 1728, there was a quarrel in Birkenau about emigration taxes. One of the supplicants quoted the example of Peter Flohri, who, in 1686, paid a tax of 2 gulden for the emigration of his son, Marcus. Marcus' property was worth a total of 20 gulden.

6. iii. JOHANN FLOHRI, b. September 28, 1679, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. January 26, 1750/51, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

iv. ADAM FLOHRI, b. October 01, 1682, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. October 1697, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

v. GERTRAUT FLOHRI, b. January 21, 1685/86, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. March 04, 1686/87, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

7. vi. PETER FLOHRI, b. April 16, 1688, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. February 09, 1770, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

vii. HANS GEORG FLOHRI, b. October 15, 1691, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

The last appearance of Hans George Flohri in Birkenau was in 1708, when he was confirmed. He does not appear, for example, on any of the town's inhabitants' lists around 1754, when the John and Elizabeth left Germany for America. He is the only other Flohri in Birkenau, besides the Johan George born in 1718, who could be a possibility for the George Flory that appears on that ship's passenger lists. Since he was not an inhabitant of the town at the time, however, it is highly unlikely that he was that George.

8. viii. ANNA MARGARETHA FLOHRI, b. May 31, 1697, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

4. MARCUS2 FLORI (HANS1 FLOHRI). He married ANNA CATHARINA.

At this point, there is no proof that Marcus Flori of Hohensachsen was the son of Hans Flori of Birkenau. The presence, though, in Hohensachsen of Hans George Flori, the son of Hans, suggests that Marcus may have been his younger brother. "Flori" is a relatively rare name in 17th Germany and Hohensachsen was a very small town. The chances that two unrelated Floris of approximately the same age would find themselves in the same small area are remote, at best. Still, this relationship could be a broader one than that of siblings--perhaps Marcus was a cousin. At any rate, the identification of Marcus Flori with Hans of Birkenau has to be regarded as tentative at best.

The name "Marcus," in general was a very rare name throughout all of Germany in the 17th century and did not come into fashion until much later. A Marcus Fluri was born in Herbetswil in the parish of Matzendorf in Switzerland on June 3, 1650 to a Hans Fluri and a Magdalena Ruetti. This Hans is not the Hans of Birkenau as the local church registry records his death within the town. However, it is possible that his son, the Swiss Marcus, did emigrate to Birkenau. There is no marriage or death record of this Marcus within the town, indicating that he left the area when he was a young man.

The Swiss Marcus is about the same age as the Marcus of Hohensachsen. Considering the rare nature of both the Christian and surnames and the extremely rare possibility that two men of the same approximate age would end up with the same combination of names at the same time, it is intriguing to speculate that both are one. There is no historical proof, however, to indicate that this is the case. If such proof could be found, it would suggest that Hans of Birkenau is somehow tied to the Swiss Fluri family of Herbetswil, who, incidentally, were Catholic, not Huguenots.

There still is no actual proof  that he is the son of Hans of Birkenau, only speculation

Children of MARCUS FLORI and ANNA CATHARINA are:

i. HANS JOACHIM3 FLORI, b. January 29, 1682/83.

ii. EVA CATHARINA FLORI, b. October 04, 1684.

Generation No. 3

5. MARIA MAGDALENA3 FLOHRI (PETER2, HANS1) was born September 25, 1673 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. She married CHRISTIAN BAUER.

Child of MARIA FLOHRI and CHRISTIAN BAUER is:

i. CATHARINA MARGARETHA4 BAUER. She was confirmed in 1713.

6. JOHANN3 FLOHRI (PETER2, HANS1) was born September 28, 1679 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, and died January 26, 1750/51 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married (1) ANNA BARBARA JAKOB November 17, 1711 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, daughter of PETER JAKOB and CATHARINA SCHMIDT. He married (2) EVA BARBARA VOLLRATH November 20, 1730 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

About 1720, Wambolt family records list Johann as receiving an income of 11 gulden a year from two gardens. He was a carriage maker. He had an honorary post checking the church's income and expenses. He purchased his house from his father for 175 florin on April 11, 1712

ANNA BARBARA JAKOB'S  father was Peter Jacob and her grandfather was Veith Jacob, who was from the town of Mumbach, a small hamlet near Birkenau. Anna had two brothers, Peter and Johann Martin, along with four sisters, Christina, Anna Margaretha, Maria Magdalina, and Anna.

Children of JOHANN FLOHRI and ANNA JAKOB are:

i. ANNA BARBARA4 FLOHRI, b. 1713, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. Her confirmation was in 1725

ii. ANNA CATHARINA FLOHRI, b. December 26, 1714, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. January 1714/15, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

9. iii. JOHANN GEORG FLOHRI, b. November 28, 1718, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. October 03, 1777, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

iv. JOHANN CHRISTIAN FLOHRI, b. August 29, 1721, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

Johann Christian Flohri left Birkenau sometime after 1733, when he was confirmed by the town church. While there are no further known records concerning him in Germany, a Christian Flory is listed as an immigrant to Philadelphia in 1744. It is very possible that this Christian was the Johann Christian of Birkenau. If so, it would have been his emigration that would have given his brothers at least some of the inspiration to leave Birkenau ten years later. His confirmation was in 1733

v. JOHANNES FLOHRI, b. April 21, 1724, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. May 1801, Northampton Co., Pa; m. CHRISTINA HAHN, April 07, 1760, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Despite the fact that "Johannes" was a very common German name of the period, this Johannes is undoubtedly the passenger on the John and Elizabeth that made the journey to Philadelphia in 1754.

According to church records, he was an inhabitant of Birkenau in 1751 and a bachelor. There are no further references in either civil or religious sources to his being in the town after that date. He was witness for baptism of nephew, Johann in 1751

vi. ANNA MARGARETHA FLOHRI, b. June 1727, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. October 19, 1727, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

Children of JOHANN FLOHRI and EVA VOLLRATH are:

vii. EVA CATHARINA4 FLOHRI, b. October 03, 1731, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. October 18, 1731, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

viii. JOHANN PETER FLOHRI, b. December 18, 1732, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. December 29, 1732, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

ix. NICHOLAS ADOLPH FLOHRI, b. October 15, 1734, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. 1819 in Virginia. He married CATHERINE. His descendants are listed on the page labeled E-2 Line.

Nicholas Adolph was. undoubtedly, the same person as the "Adolph Flohri" who appears on the ship list of the John and Elizabeth in 1754. They both spell their name as "Flohri"; they both were part of an extended family of carpenter-farmers; they were approximately the same age; and there is no record of him in the local church records after his baptism, indicating that left the town at some point. He was named after godfather, Nicholas Adolph Hardwich, a miller

x. ANNA MARGARETHA FLOHRI, b. June 26, 1739, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

10. xi. JOHANN MICHAEL FLOHRI, b. May 21, 1739, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. April 20, 1787, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

xii. CATHERINA MARGARETHA FLOHRI, b. June 10, 1743, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

7. PETER3 FLOHRI (PETER2, HANS1) was born April 16, 1688 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, and died February 09, 1770 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married (1) EVA ? (There is some question about this marriage. See below). He married (2) ANNA MARGARETHA JOST February 01, 1717/18 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married (3) EVA CATHERINA WEBER July 1737 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

On February 19, 1752, Peter Flohri borrowed 150 florin at 5% interest from Wambolt magistrate Leonhard Krauss, giving as surety his house and 1/2 acre of land along "Thorn Way." Peter's brother Johann, who was a carriage maker like himself, had died the year before. Perhaps Peter was attempting to raise money to buy the business from his heir(s).

Around 1720, Wambolt records list him as receiving an income of 4 gulden a year from retailing brandy.

On April 9, 1709, Peter was fined, along with Lenhard Jost and Hans Paul Schab (son of Hans Schab), 1 gulden for playing hazard games on Easter Monday after he had received communion on Easter Sunday. He was a carriage maker

The figure of Eva?, who is listed as marriage 1 is somewhat sketchy. If she did marry Peter, it was his second or third marriage, not his first. She was Catholic as were her children, and her husband was Protestant. Therefore, no record of this marriage or her children appears in the Birkenau Lutheran records where her husband's family is recorded. Yet a German researcher of this family has found records of a marriage between this Eva and Peter, along with indications that they had at least 3 children (Anna Margaretha, Simon, and Johan, born approximately 1739-1741, when the Protestant Church records appear to indicate that he was married to Eva Catharina Weber). Peter Flohri did have two wives in the Protestant records, Anna Margaretha Jost, whom he married on Feb. 1, 1717/18 and who died in 1737. He then married Eva Catharina Weber in July of 1737, and had a child by her (Johan Peter) in 1745. Her death death is unknown.

If Peter did marry a Catholic Eva (not Eva Catharina Weber, who was definitely Protestant), it is difficult to see when he did so, for, based on the birth dates of his children, he would have had to have been a bigamist. Either that, or the estimated birth dates of his Catholic children by Eva are incorrect.

I did check out the Catholic church records in Birkenau. Unfortunately, they do not begin until 1800. The Flohri name does not appear at all in these records, but the name Simon Flohr does as the father of a Leonard Flohr. This is the same person as the Simon Flohri that the German researcher listed as the son of Peter Flohri.

There are several problems with the supposed marriage between Peter Flohri, Protestant of Birkenau, with the Catholic Eva. As already indicated, there does not seem to be a period of time in which he could have legally married her, his two recorded marriages with Anna Margaretha Jost and the Protestant Eva Catharina Weber overlapping so closely.

The other problem is that the Catholic records concerning Simon and his relatives spell the name as "Flohr," not "Flohri." While records both here and abroad do show an occasional Flory showing up as a Flor and vice versa, in general the two families are separate and distinct. In other words, the Flohr families (the modern spelling is generally "Flower") and the Flohri families, despite the similarity of names, are not related. While it is conceivable that Peter Flohri, uncle to the three brothers from Birkenau who emigrated to America in 1754, is the same person as the Peter Flohr, husband of Eva? and father of Simon Flohr, it is not likely. More probably we are dealing with two separate individuals with similar names.

I have left the information about Eva? and Simon (and some of his descendants) on this genealogy for informational purposes.

i. SOPHIE ELIZABETH4 LOEW, b. March 04, 1730/31, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

Generation No. 4

9. JOHANN GEORG4 FLOHRI (JOHANN3, PETER2, HANS1) was born November 28, 1718 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, and died October 03, 1777 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married CATHARINA MARGARETHA SCHAB May 06, 1749 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, daughter of JOHANN NICHOLAS SCHAB.

Of the three brothers who migrated to America in 1754, Johann George or George is by far the most elusive. To date, no verifiable fact has surfaced to indicate his presence in America, a presence that must have been exceedingly short, for he is listed as having attended a baptism in Birkenau in 1758. It is possible that George came to America merely on a scouting expedition to see if it was a suitable place to bring his family.

Town records indicate that he bought a house in Birkenau from a Conrad Brauer in 1761, an "old house, according to court records, one that was rather inexpensive. It was an unusual age to buy a this type of house (he was 43), and the purchase is, perhaps, evidence that he had left the town for a period of time and he needed a new residence for his family. The character of the contract was altered by the government in 1764, and he brought a lawsuit in 1766 over a dispute about the property's borders. He received communion in 1732 and he was a carriage maker.

Children of JOHANN FLOHRI and CATHARINA SCHAB are:

i. JOHANN GEORG5 FLOHRI, b. Bef. 1751.

The only reference to Johann George Flohri junior in Birkenau records is to that of his being a witness to a baptism there in 1765. The priest who recorded the name may have confused it with the name of George senior's son, Johannes. If not, this younger George was probably born outside the city, as there are no church records in Birkenau that record his birth. Nor are there marriage or death records for him.

If there was such a person, he may have been the issue of an earlier marriage for his father.

14. ii. JOHANN FLOHRI, b. April 24, 1751, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; d. April 13, 1830, Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

10. JOHANN MICHAEL4 FLOHRI (JOHANN3, PETER2, HANS1) was born May 21, 1739 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, and died April 20, 1787 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married (1) EVA ELIZABETH KLING April 30, 1765 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married (2) EVA CATHERINA KADEL January 21, 1772 in Birkenau, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

He was probably born in 1741 and was weaver

This method of listing does not necessarily involve Father-to-Son relationships, but was a method by which local priests were able to keep their listings straight when it came to people with similar names. Johannes IV, for example, is the son, not grandson, of Johannes II. The same "device" is sometimes employed with other families in the same records. He was a wagoner (carriage maker).

The Birkenau Kirkenbuch has him listed as both Nickolaus Leonard and Johannes Leonard Florig in the same entry. Nickolaus Leonhard it probably correct.

27. JOHANN PHILIPP6 FLORIG (JOHANN LEONARD5, JOHANN MICHAEL4 FLOHRI, JOHANN3, PETER2, HANS1) was born December 30, 1831 in Birkenau, Darmstadt-Hesse, Germany, and died March 31, 1899 in Loudon St., Chambersburg, PA. He married MARIA KOHLKOFF May 15, 1856 in Second Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, PA.

Sometime prior to 1856, when Phillip was married in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, he emigrated from Birkenau, Germany to the United States. Chambersburg, a town located near Pittsburgh, was also the destination about a century earlier of George Flory, immigrant son of Johannes Flory, who was one of three brothers who came to America in 1754. It is tempting to conclude that the family remained in touch for about 100 years since this first immigration and that Phillip came to Chambersburg because it was known to him from family lore. There is no evidence, however, that this is, in fact, what happened. The original Johannes was illiterate, and, if the families in America and Germany did keep in touch, it would have had, initially, to have been through a third party.

Still, the possibility is there. Chambersburg is not a large area, and the fact that two members of a small family settled there, albeit about 100 years apart, seems to be more than simply coincidental.

Phillip's daughter, Emma, did move to Pittsburgh, and, perhaps, more of the family may have done likewise. There are rumors today from European Florigs that they may have either distant or ancient relatives in that city. Some Florigs also appear around the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century in Thorton, Cooke County, Illinois.

No further information about Phillip's descendants is known beyond what is presented here.

Children of JOHANN FLORIG and MARIA KOHLKOFF are:

i. KATHERINE7 FLORIG, b. March 1857; m. GEORGE W. WILSON.

ii. SOPHIE ELIZABETH FLORIG, b. January 22, 1861; d. September 04, 1862.
