Daniel is the ninth child (6th son) of Abraham and Susanna. In 1781 Daniel (age 26) married Anna (Nancy) Beidler, daughter of Daniel Beidler (ca. 1730-1777) and Barbara Lehman of Hellam Twp, York CO. Daniel Flory is listed as a single man on the Hellam Twp tax lists for 1779 (p. 58) and 1780 (p. 289). In 1781-1782 Daniel Flory was living in Manchester Twp where he operated the Beidler distillery. In 1783 he is listed as having a wife and two infant twins (male and female). In 1784 (p.692) he is operating the other Beidler distillery in Hellam Twp. Three more sons were born in Hellam Twp. between 1784 and 1788). The first four sons were born in York CO. While Daniel was on the March 1788 York Tax list, he is not on the 1788 list of persons who paid taxes that came due in the fall.
JOURNEY TO ROGERSVILLE (HAWKINS CO) TN
The family left PA in the spring or early summer of 1788 and stayed over winter in the Shenandoah Valley, the major route for travelers heading south. Shenandoah is also the place where many early descendents of Lancaster and York families relocated. Daniel and Nancy were traveling with others and probably in a Connestoga Wagon made in PA. They would have made arrangement in advance to stay with some of their family friends over winter. They left in the spring of 1789 and arrived in Rogersville by early fall. In her will dated 23 OCT 1789, Barbara Beidler states that two daughters, Anne married to Daniel Flurey and Frena married to Jacob Graf, were living in Hawkins CO, N. C. The Coffman family also arrived in Rogersville at the same time. Rogersville was (1)in the Territory South of the Ohio River and (2) the State of North Carolina before the State of Tennessee was formed.
DANIEL'S PROPERTY: Daniel Flora bought Lot # 34 on the public square from Joseph Rogers and James Hagan (Deed Book 2, p. 83). Daniel was a distiller in both York PA and in Hawkins CO TN. Daniel's establishment was in the center of town across from the four acre public square facing the new Courthouse. On 9 SEPT Daniel sold this same property to John Hall for a sizeable profit due to the real estate boom. The Masonic Temple (built 1838-1840) now stands on Lot 34. ("Rogersville Review," James Woods Regan and plot map by Charles W. Young).
HOMEPLACE: On 20 July 1796 Daniel Flora bought 100 acres (NC Land Grant #752, Deed Book 4 p. 267). On 20 Jan 1797, Daniel Flora bought 400 acres from Stockley Donelson on the north side of the Holston River (Deed Book 2, p. 482).
The Flora home place was built in 1797 on the Holston River about three miles southwest of Rogersville and just off the Abingdon Stock Road. The large two story house was half a mile off Flora Ferry Road with large fireplaces that opened to the living room, kitchen and upstairs bedrooms. The chimney and foundation was made of native hand-cut stone. There were two large covered front and back porches.
Daniel and his wife Nancy, along with their son Daniel Jr. and grandson Jacob, are buried in the Flora cemetery (now Pleasant Hill) near the home place. Daniel's will was dated 28 APR 1840. He left all of his estate to his beloved wife Nancy (home, household furniture, horses, cattle, hogs, farming equipment, etc. (Hawkins CO, TN, Will Book No.1, page 189). Due to courthouse fires, there is no existing will for Nancy.
