Edward Flurry was born at England.

Research-Note*

In the 1790 census of Charles County, Maryland, Edward is listed as living with 4 white males under the age of 16, 3 white females, including a possible wife, and two slaves.

In 1791, the following FLOWRY males were included on a list of 271 subscribers to a fund for repairing the Durham Parish Church in Charles County: Henry, William, Elias, John, Edward Jr., and Goodwin. (Historic Graves of Maryland and the District of Columbia, Ridgely, 1908) A Rhody Bowie was also a member of this church and was included on the subscribers’ list. William and Sarah FLORY witnessed the will of Rhody Bowie, dated Oct 6, 1808. (Microfilm of Maryland State Archives No.CR49, Wills Liber A.F. No 7.) According to a family history of the descendants of Rhody Bowie of Charles Co., Maryland (“Where the Brambles Bloom,” compiled by G. Henry Bowie, 1980), Mary FLORY, daughter of Nancy Bowie FLORY and William (?) FLORY, moved to Abbeville County, South Carolina, along with some of the Bowies. Her father was deceased, and there is no evidence that any other FLORY made the move.

The following information and evaluation was sent to me by Julie Carter (cuzinjulie@hotmail.com) on Aug. 18, 2005:

Sarah FLURRY was named as daughter in the distribution of her mother's esate in 1789, Charles Co. MD. Her parents were John Cooksey, Sr. (d. 1758 Charles Co. MD) s/o Samuel Cooksey (d.1798-9 Charles Co. MD) and Mary REED, d/o Thomas Reed.

I don't have proof of their marriage - it came from a Cooksey descendant who was a DAR researcher and is now deceased. Her record said Edward FLURRY (no Jr. or Sr. attached). Sarah's birth is estimated in the 1740's so she may have married in the 1760's unless this was a 2nd marriage for Edward at a later date.

Edward and Sarah were members of Durham Parish, Charles Co. as were her mother and most families of Sarah's siblings. Edward, SR. made subscriptions (pledges) and payments to the church from 1783 through 1790. Edward, JR. subscribed 1784-1790. After 1790 Edward JR. was not listed - only "Edward". This must reflect the death of either Edward SR or Edward JR for in 1791 a pledge was made by "Mrs. (widow) FLOWRY" (widow written in record) and pledges and payments continued in the name of "Edward" from 1792 through 1801.

In 1817 Sally FLORY was listed as having been "paid for her service as Sexton for 3 yrs." Depending on the job description, Sarah (Sally) may have been rather elderly for the job albeit she could have been doing light work and overseeing the rest. This could be another person, of course.

The church records which I have viewed on film provided no other information to identify persons. The surname was spelled FLEWRY, FLOREY, FLORREY, FLORY, FLOURY, FLOWRY, FLURRY. Given names were JOHN, WILLIAM, GUSTAVUS, HENRY, ELIAS and MATTHEW.

The Charles Co. MD. census, 1790 lists Edward FLURRY, Edward FLURRY, JR, John and William FLURRY.

"Edward FLUORY" is the only name resembling FLURRY in Charles Co. census of 1800.

In 1810 Sarah FLORY is listed in the Charles Co. census and the only one with a similar surname.

My assessment to date is that Sarah Cooksey married Edward FLURRY, SR. He died c/1791 and Sarah was still living in 1810. That after the death of Edward Sr., Edward Jr. just went by "Edward". Re the given names cited from Durham Parish records.... the son of Sarah's cousin was named Henry Cooksey (b. 1758) and he was rather prominent in the area; several of her sisters and cousins named a son Gustavus (I haven't yet decided why), John was her father, William her Uncle. Of course John and William are too common to make assumptions but still raises a possibility that these were her sons.
